Funeral held for man in ex-Patriot's murder case

BOSTON (AP) ? Hundreds of relatives, friends and well-wishers have wept together and hugged at the funeral of a semi-pro football player whose killing led to murder and weapons charges against former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez.

The body of Odin Lloyd was found June 17 near Hernandez's home. Police arrested Hernandez on Wednesday and charged him with orchestrating the execution-style shooting.

Members of Lloyd's football team chanted his name Saturday as pallbearers placed his casket in a hearse outside Church of the Holy Spirit in Boston's Mattapan neighborhood.

Prosecutors allege Hernandez arranged the killing because Lloyd talked to the wrong people at a nightclub.

Hernandez has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail. Two other men are also in custody. Prosecutors say the three were with Lloyd shortly before his death.

Seiki SE39UY04

4K, or?Ultra HD, is the future of television. That's a fairly indisputable fact. It's the same step we took a decade ago to high-definition TV. And like with the very first HDTVs, the first 4K sets we've seen have been expensive. Sony released a screen with a $25K sticker price last year, and even models coming out now generally retail for at least $5,000 when you can find them. Little-known HDTV manufacturer Seiki is challenging this notion with the SE50UY04, a 50-inch LED-backlit set with 4K resolution (3,840 by 2,160?four times that of 1080p) and a price of just $1,499.99 (list).

Editors' Note: This review is based on tests performed on the Seiki SE50UY04, the 50-inch model of the series. Besides the screen-size difference, the 39-inch $699.99 (list) SE39UY04?is otherwise?identical in features, and while we didn't perform lab tests on this specific model, we expect similar performance.

?It's not only the first 4K HDTV we've tested, it's the least expensive we've seen. But when you consider you can get a similarly sized set like the 46-inch version of our Editors' Choice RCA LED42C45RQ?for less than half the price, though, you have to ask yourself just how much 4K content you'll be able to get your hands on now, or even in the near future. If you need 4K now, you won't find it for less, and for this, we've rated this set slightly higher. But be prepared to make some picture-quality and feature sacrifices for all these pixels at this low price.

Design
The SE50UY04??looks very simple, with a thin, glossy black plastic bezel that runs around the entire screen, concave at the edges to give it a sense of depth. It sits on a rectangular black glass base that holds the screen steady but doesn't let it pivot. A light on the bottom center of the screen turns blue when switched on and red when plugged in but switched off.

The back of the panel holds a USB port, an HDMI port, component video inputs, and a 3.5mm headphone jack facing left. Two more HDMI ports, another USB port, a VGA video input, 3.5mm, coaxial, and RCA stereo audio inputs, and an F connector for an antenna face downward. Basic controls sit tucked behind the right edge of the screen, but you'll probably use the 7.2-inch matte black remote the majority of the time. The buttons are small, rubber, and not backlit, but the Menu button and navigation pad are easy to find under your thumb.

Despite its ultra HD resolution, the SE50UY04 is a barebones HDTV. You get no network connectivity, no online services, no 3D, and none of the other extras you'd expect from a 1080p HDTV in this price range. It does support a 120Hz refresh rate, which puts it slightly above many $500 budget sets. The menu system is similarly simple, with very few picture options. This proved to be an issue during testing, since I couldn't adjust the aspect ratio to correct for overscan when the set was connected to a computer. The HDTV cropped the 1080p picture slightly, shaving off a slice from each side. A "dot for dot" aspect ratio also lets you view content exactly as sized, centered on the screen.

Performance
Given its test results, the SE50UY04?should?a have remarkable picture. We test HDTVs using a Klein K10-A Colorimeter, DisplayMate test patterns, and SpectraCal's CalMAN 5 software, and after basic dark room calibration the screen produced a peak brightness of 350.287 cd/m2?and a black level of 0.009 cd/m2. These are excellent levels and produce a very impressive contrast ratio of 38,920:1. However, while the panel gets very bright, I noticed that it blew out several of the higher white level squares in the test pattern, indicating that it loses detail in highlights. The 1080p RCA LED42C45RQ doesn't offer nearly as high a contrast ratio (1,796:1), but it showed slightly better shadow and highlight detail.

Seiki SE50UY04Color accuracy was disappointing, as seen in the CIE color chart to the left. White was warm and slightly green, while red, green, and blue all missed the mark compared with their ideal values. The chart shows the measured values in circles and the ideal values in the squares, and green and red barely got within range while blue was completely off.

4K vs. 1080p
Because no consumer media currently supports 4K resolution, Seiki supplied us with a media server loaded with native 4K stock video, which looked excellent, even when you were standing right up next to the screen. Footage of cityscapes, bustling urban intersections, speeding trains, and computer-generated action sequences looked incredibly crisp and clear, with far more fine detail than you'd see on any 1080p movie. But that's less a testament to the panel's quality and more to the potential of 4K video technology.

You probably won't buy a 4K HDTV to watch 20 minutes of sample stock footage. You'll want to watch movies and television, and for that you'll need to rely on the SE50UY04's upscaling processor. It produces video that isn't nearly as sharp as the sample, because it has to take each pixel and convert it into four pixels on the screen. It doesn't just quadruple the pixels' size to fit the screen, though. It uses an algorithm to determine the edges and curves of the screen, and tries to determine what each pixel would be at 4K resolution. The result is slightly splotchy video filled with artifacts, like watching a standard DVD upconverted to 1080p. In fact, that's exactly what's happening; in both cases, the screen has to fill in the gaps of the video provided, so pixels and jaggies, which we're used to, become splotches and blurs. This isn't a testament to the SE50UY04's quality, either; even the 4K-upconverting Editors' Choice Oppo BDP-103?Blu-ray player produced similar results when processing video on its end. This is again an issue of the technology itself, not the products.

I watched?Tron: Legacy?on Blu-ray on the SE50UY04, and while the picture certainly wasn't bad, the upconversion didn't make it look any better than on a nearby 1080p screen. Shadow details looked muddled, and made further indistinct with the splotchy upconversion. While this panel can get very dark and very bright, it doesn't offer the subtle steps necessary to really show off sharp objects in dark scenes. For the same $1,500, you could get the Samsung PN51E6500EF, a plasma HDTV that offers not only much better shadow and highlight details, but better colors and features like online services and out-of-the-box 3D.

Power Consumption
For a 50-inch edge-lit LED HDTV, the SE50UY04 is a bit of a power hog. Under normal viewing conditions the set consumes 114 watts, which is high for an LED TV of this size. Because the panel has such a high pixel density, it likely requires more power, but we can't confirm that this is the case. Typically, backlighting is what eats up the most power, with LED HDTVs consuming least, followed by CCFL sets, then plasma. For comparison, the 60-inch?Vizio E601I-A3?LED consumes 118 watts and it's a bigger panel.

Still in its infancy, 4K has a long way to go. And while the Seiki SE50UY04's $1,500 price tag makes it at least feasible to purchase, there isn't enough 4K content to justify it yet. It's a decent screen that gets satisfyingly bright and dark, but color issues and light bloom keeps its performance solidly in the budget HDTV category, where you can find our Editors' Choice set, the 42-inch RCA LED42C45RQ for a third of the price, or the larger and full-featured 60-inch Vizio E601I-A3 for two-thirds' of the price. Unless you're really committed as an early adopter, the SE50UY04 has too many attractive 1080p competitors and not enough 4K media to make it worth the cash.

Stones to play long-awaited Glastonbury gig

PILTON, England (AP) ? This could be the last time, as Mick Jagger once sang. For the Rolling Stones, it's definitely a first.

The veteran rock rabble-rousers play Britain's Glastonbury Festival on Saturday, their debut appearance at the country's most prestigious rock music event.

Many of the 135,000 festival ticket-holders are expected to cram the space in front of the Pyramid Stage for the gig.

Jagger wouldn't reveal details of the set list in a pre-show BBC radio interview, saying "it's nice to have a bit of a surprise."

Jagger, who turns 70 in July, also gave no clue about whether the band he started with Keith Richards in 1962 will ever call it quits. He said, "I've no idea," before telling an interviewer that he'd probably continue as long as he was wanted.

The band recently played a string of North American dates on its "50 and Counting" tour and is due to play two concerts in London's Hyde Park next month.

The Stones turned down offers to play Glastonbury for years, but appear to have embraced the down-to-earth spirit of the festival, held on a farm in southwest England. On Saturday Jagger tweeted a picture of himself outside a yurt, a Mongolian-style felt tent where he reportedly spent the night.

Guitarist Richards said the band was "destined to play Glastonbury."

"I look upon it as a culmination of our British heritage really," he said. "It had to be done and it's going to be done, and we'll see what happens, you know."

The Glastonbury Festival was founded by Michael Eavis in 1970 on his Worthy Farm near Pilton, 120 miles (193 kilometers) southwest of London. It is famous for its eclectic lineup ? and the mud that overwhelms the site in rainy years.

Other performers on Saturday include Elvis Costello and Primal Scream.

But for many festivalgoers, the Stones were the main event.

?"I know the festival organizers have been trying to get hold of them for a long time, so there will be a brilliant atmosphere," said Adam Robinson, 25. "I predict there will be a massive sing-a-long."

The three-day festival wraps up Sunday with a headlining set from Mumford & Sons.

Golf notebook: Shorter Hart showing some heart

The key to Jeff Hart's success: Try less and less.

After shooting Fox Chapel Golf Club's second-lowest score Friday at 5-under 65, Hart said he wasn't necessarily swinging that well on the course. He simply stopped thinking about his game, and said "let it go."

"Basically, I don't feel like my game's all that good," Hart said. "I'm changing my swing every other hole out there like I normally do."

Hart finished his second round at the Constellation Senior Players Championship at 7 under 133, and walked off the course as the clubhouse leader. Hart was one of 15 golfers to finish the second round, before rain Friday postponed the remainder of play.

While Hart said his game isn't substantially better, his numbers Friday prove otherwise. He hit 13 of 14 fairways in regulation and had seven birdies.

While fairways were an easy target for Hart, he frequently was leaving his drives short, often driving the ball around 230-240 yards with a foot or so of roll. The course played so long for Hart, that irons weren't a common option for him. Instead, the fairway wood would be his companion.

"Some of the holes were playing very long for me," Hart said. "I'm hitting it so short."

While Hart birdied the par-5 second hole, a common score for the field, he also birdied the par-3 third, which isn't so routine.

Hart continued his strong opening, as he birdied five of the first nine holes, reaping the benefits of an early tee time and soft greens from rain Thursday, which began to firm up Friday as the day went on before more rain fell.

But Hart does have the advantage of only having to play 18 holes today, as 66 golfers in the field will have to begin their day at 8 a.m., where they left off Friday.

Hart was only 1 under on his final nine holes, as his spot near the top of the leader board made it harder for Hart to not really think about his play. With a Saturday and Sunday that should have Hart in competition for the lead, a "thoughtless" game will only grow tougher to accomplish.

"That's the challenge," Hart said of "letting it loose" into the weekend. "That's the issue for me."

Playing in his first Champions Tour tournament, Colin Montgomerie was disappointed Thursday, when he finished the first round tied for 21st.

He was unsatisfied with his putting, which led him to a first-round 1-under 68.

But Friday, Montgomerie came out of the gates a little warmer. He birdied four of his first seven holes, although he did bogey the par-3 sixth.

After playing 12 holes before the rain, Montgomerie finished the shortened day 4 under for a tie for 10th, a much better position to make a move over the final two days of the tournament.

Second-round leaders or co-leaders have won just 12 of the previous 30 Constellation Senior Players Championships. It also has happened just twice in the past 14 years -- Loren Roberts in 2007 and Fred Couples in 2011. The biggest climb to champion in tournament history happened in 2006, when Bobby Wadkins came from 30th place to win the event.

Trading day could be shaped by Fed officials?

markets

Fed speakers could shape the trading day Thursday, starting with New York Fed President William Dudley who speaks just after the stock market open.

Markets have been fixated on Fed commentary this week, after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke last week said that the Fed could begin to wind down its $85 billion monthly bond purchases before the end of the year. That sent already rising yields higher, and stocks have been on a roller coaster ride. With the prospect of higher rates and a firmer dollar, gold has plunged to a near three-year low.

(Read More: Why Bond Selling Hysteria Is Overdone)

Stocks took flight Wednesday, with the Dow ending up 149 points at 14,910, after a surprising downward revision to first quarter GDP made traders doubt that the Fed will be too aggressive in moving to slow bond purchases. Economists had expected 2.4 percent growth, but the number was 1.8 percent instead.

The stock market's bullishness has been penned in by the Fed's tapering plans, which Bernanke said would be dependent on improvement in the economy. The S&P 500 Wednesday rose 15 to 1603, the center of what had been a supportive range before the market fell through it last week. The 10-year Treasury yield, meanwhile, fell to 2.54 percent from 2.61 percent, as investors stepped in to buy bonds

"People are still looking at GDP which is very much yesterday's data. That kind of revision makes people say that it makes it harder for Bernanke to taper," said Art Cashin, UBS director of floor operations at the NYSE. On Tuesday, stocks went higher but that was after better-than-expected economic data on housing and durable goods. Tuesday's move was also driven by comments from the People's Bank of China that helped soothe global market concerns about a credit crunch in China.

Dudley speaks at 10 a.m. ET on the regional economy and the labor market for college graduates, and while those topics are not about Fed policy, traders have been speculating his speech would be worth watching.

"That will be a real focus. People will be watching. They think if anybody's a spokesman for Bernanke, it's him," said Cashin.

(Read More: The Real Reason 1Q GDP Took a Hit)

Dudley is a key member of the Fed's core, and no one other than Bernanke, or Fed Vice Chair Janet Yellen, possible successor to Bernanke, has as much credibility when it comes to conveying what direction the Fed might take.

"That will be an important speech. He is in the center of the committee, or one of those towards the center for the committee and aligned with Chairman Bernanke, so it will be interesting to hear how he discusses the outlook, what he says about tapering and how he's interpreting the recent data," said Dean Maki, chief U.S. economist at Barclays. Traders also want to hear what he says about the violent reaction in markets since the Fed meeting last week.

Maki said the markets may have become confused when Bernanke signaled during his press conference that the unemployment rate would be the most important variable to determine when the Fed will taper its bond buying. Bernanke said the Fed would reduce its purchases in "measured steps" and that it would be done with purchases by the middle of next year, when the unemployment rate should be about 7 percent.

"We think that's (7 percent) going to be achieved by the first quarter, so that's why even though growth will be sluggish, we think the Fed will be tapering," said Maki. Maki said he expects the Fed to begin cutting back on its purchases in September.

He said the Fed confused the markets by pinning a 7 percent unemployment rate target on the quantitative easing program, while it has also said a trigger to raise short-term rates could be when unemployment reaches 6.5 percent.

(Read More: New Math Makes It Easier to Lower the Unemployment Rate)

"I think the problem is by tying tapering and the first rate hike to the unemployment rate when the Fed moves up the timing on tapering, it seems reasonable to many market participants that the Fed may be also raising rates sooner than it otherwise might have," said Maki. The Fed forecasts hiking the Fed funds rate, now zero, in 2015 but some traders see it happening sooner.

"It's an odd time for the Fed to be talking about tapering when GDP growth is slowing, job growth is slow?and inflation is about half the rate they expect it to be," said Maki. He expects 1.5 percent growth in the second quarter, and 2 percent growth for the balance of the year, while the Fed sees growth picking up to 3 percent later this year.

Other Fed speakers Thursday include Fed Gov. Jerome Powell, who speaks at 10:30 a.m. on non-conventional monetary policy, and Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart, a non-voting member, speaks at 12:30 on the economic outlook.

Minneapolis Fed President Narayana Kocherlakota told CNBC's senior economic correspondent Steve Liesman, in an interview Wednesday on "Squawk Box" that the Fed needs to be clearer in its communication on the Fed funds target rate, and the market reaction to Fed tapering has been "out-sized."

"There continues to be a great deal of uncertainty about what the Fed is going to do with the Fed Funds rate, our main policy instrument, as the economy recovers more," he said. The Fed did repeat that it would not raise rates until unemployment falls to 6.5 percent or lower, providing the outlook for inflation stays under 2.5 percent.

"We sort of take for granted that people understand that we're going to be in the business of [rate] accommodation for long after asset purchases end," Kocherlakota said. "We're in the business of accommodation as the economic recovery strengthens."

Besides the Fed, traders will be focused on data, including weekly jobless claims and personal income and spending at 8:30 a.m. ET, and pending home sales at 10 a.m. The Treasury auctions $29 billion in 7-year notes at 1 p.m.

The auction follows a $35 billion 5-year auction Wednesday and a $35 billion 2-year auction Tuesday, both with weakish results. "The results for the 2- and 5-year do not bode well for the 7-year tomorrow," said Ian Lyngen, senior Treasury strategist at CRT Capital. "There's limited risk appetite ahead of the end of the quarter. "

Utah state senator proposes to longtime partner

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? An openly gay Utah state senator didn't just give a speech at a party celebrating two Supreme Court victories for gay rights ? he took to the stage to propose to his longtime boyfriend.

Democratic state Sen. Jim Dabakis popped the question to partner Stephen Justesen Wednesday at a rainbow flag-draped rally at Salt Lake City's Club Sound. The two met 26 years ago.

"Stephen, after all these years, will you marry me?" Dabakis said over the whoops of an approving crowd.

Dabakis, who took office earlier this year, is an art dealer and founding chair of the Utah Pride Center. In 2011, he became the first openly gay person to lead a state party in Utah.

Just hours after the high court on Wednesday struck down part of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage between a man and a woman, and cleared the way for same-sex unions in California, Dabakis stepped on stage at the celebration.

He opened by saying the gay marriage issue was "very deeply, deeply personal" for him, and introduced the crowd to "a wonderful man" he met nearly three decades ago.

That's when Dabakis pulled out a ring he said he'd purchased that day and put it on Justensen's finger.

Justesen told the crowd Dabakis had given him a different ring years ago that he still wears, but "this is super fantastic to have another one."

Dabakis told The Salt Lake Tribune the proposal was a spur-of-the-moment decision and a wedding date hasn't been set.

Conn. hometown of Hernandez shocked at star's fall

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? The murder case against former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has led investigators to his hometown of Bristol, Conn., the working-class Hartford suburb where he began a meteoric rise that would carry him to the upper echelons of the NFL.

He is remembered as a fun-loving teenager at Bristol Central High School, where he followed in the footsteps of his older brother, D.J., who would star as a quarterback and tight end at the University of Connecticut.

Some recall him struggling with the death of his father, Dennis, in 2006, but remaining determined to become a pro athlete, spending hours working out before and after school. As Bristol police assist Massachusetts investigators, arresting one local man as a fugitive from justice, the community was left to ponder the fall of the hometown hero with the $40 million pro contract and a new family of his own.

A former high school teammate, Andrew Ragali, 24, said the troubled street hood he has seen portrayed on television is not the Aaron Hernandez he knew.

"You could maybe say he was immature, but he wasn't a gang-banger at all," Ragali said. "I think when he went to college things might have changed, hanging around with the wrong people, but in high school, he wasn't like that at all."

The 23-year-old Hernandez was arrested Wednesday at his mansion in North Attleborough, Mass., and accused of orchestrating the execution-style shooting of his friend, Odin Lloyd, allegedly because Lloyd had talked to the wrong people at a nightclub. He was denied bail at a hearing Thursday in a Massachusetts courtroom, where a prosecutor said a Hummer belonging to Hernandez turned up an ammunition clip matching the caliber of casings found at the scene of Lloyd's killing.

Hernandez's lawyer argued his client is not a risk to flee and the case against him is circumstantial.

On June 16, the night before the slaying, a prosecutor said, Hernandez texted two unidentified friends and asked them to hurry to Massachusetts from Connecticut. A few minutes later, he texted Lloyd to tell him he wanted to get together, the prosecutor said. Authorities said surveillance footage showed the friends arriving, but they did not say who fired the shots.

New Britain State's Attorney Brian Preleski said Thursday that his office and Bristol police have been assisting investigators in Massachusetts and that Carlos Ortiz, 27, of Bristol, had been charged as a fugitive from justice. He waived extradition to Massachusetts and was being held on $1.5 million bail in Hartford.

Ortiz's public defender, Alfonzo Sirica, declined to comment about the case.

Massachusetts state police said Thursday night they were seeking another man, Ernest Wallace, in connection with Lloyd's killing. They issued an alert and wanted poster for Wallace, saying he was considered armed and dangerous, and sought the public's help in tracking down a silver or gray 2012 Chrysler 300 with Rhode Island license plates he was seen driving.

In Connecticut, Bristol is known to many as the home of ESPN, Otis Elevator and the Hernandez family.

Aaron and his brother each earned honors as the state's Gatorade high school player of the year, although they played several years apart at Bristol Central. Aaron would often visit his brother at UConn, and at one point verbally committed to follow D.J. and play for UConn himself. But Aaron became too big a star for the state school and signed instead to play at the University of Florida, a national powerhouse where he was an All-American.

Ragali recalled seeing Hernandez again, years after high school, at a Hartford bar. He described him as quieter, with more tattoos. But said he was very nice, asked about his family and took pictures with his girlfriend.

It was after his father's death that Hernandez began smoking marijuana and hanging out with a rough crowd, Hernandez's mother, Terri, told USA Today in 2009.

"The shock of losing his dad, there was so much anger," she said at the time.

Hernandez's mother works in the office at the local South Side elementary school, and other family members still live in Bristol.

"All I can say is that he will be cleared of all these charges in the end," she told the Bristol Press outside her home Wednesday. "Just let it play out until the end."

On Wednesday night, police searched a Bristol home and garage owned by Andres Valderrama, whom WFSB-TV identified as an uncle. A message was left at the home Thursday seeking comment.

The Patriots, who cut Hernandez following his arrest Wednesday, drafted him in 2010 and signed him last summer to five-year contract worth $40 million.

During the draft, one team said it wouldn't take him under any circumstances, and he was passed over by one club after another before New England picked him in the fourth round. Afterward, Hernandez said he had failed a drug test in college ? reportedly for marijuana ? and was up front with teams about it.

A Florida man filed a lawsuit last week claiming Hernandez shot him in the face after they argued at a strip club in February.

Hernandez became a father on Nov. 6 and said he intended to change his ways: "Now, another one is looking up to me. I can't just be young and reckless Aaron no more."

Hernandez could face life in prison if convicted.

Cantor: ?I can?t tell you what?s in that big Senate bill?

A bill that would overhaul the nation's immigration system passed with bipartisan support in the Senate Thursday, but some of the top Republican leaders in the House say they haven?t bothered to find out what?s in it.

In an exclusive interview with Yahoo News Thursday evening, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said he?s not aware of the details in the Senate version of the immigration bill and reiterated that the House would move ahead with its own approach.

?I can?t tell you what?s in that big Senate bill, and the well over 1,000 or 1,500 pages that it may be, and that?s my concern,? Cantor told Yahoo News. ?I don?t know if you could ask a lot of the senators what?s in that bill. And that?s my concern.?

The Senate bill is comprehensive, combining mandates for border security and a pathway to legal status for immigrants living in the United States unlawfully. House Republican leaders have signaled that they will take a piecemeal approach to immigration reform instead, a move that could make it difficult for the chambers to reconcile the two versions.

In the interview, Cantor declined to say explicitly if he thought the House could pass a bill that includes a pathway to legality, but he did say ?there are a lot of discussions that still need to be had" about the issue. Cantor emphasized his support for a bill that would provide a pathway to citizenship for children of immigrants with unlawful status.

Even though the Senate moved swiftly on immigration, Cantor suggested that the House would not hurry to pass its own version of an immigration bill.

?In the House, we?re going to be very deliberative about the approach, trying to address a very broken immigration system and to see what we can do to try and fix it,? Cantor said.

Yahoo News will air the rest of the wide-ranging interview with Cantor on Friday.

Previous strikes and protests about the tough terms of Portugal's 78 billion euro ($100 billion) bailout by the European Union and IMF in 2011 have been largely non-violent, unlike unrest in Greece or more recently Brazil and Turkey. ...http://news.yahoo.com/portuguese-general-strike-halt-public-transport-074603485.htmlThu, 27 Jun 2013 04:01:50 -0400Reutersportuguese-general-strike-halt-public-transport-074603485Office of Fair Trading orders review of payday lendersBy Matt Scuffham LONDON (Reuters) - The Office of Fair Trading has asked for a review into competition among payday lenders, after finding evidence a lack of choice means firms are profiting from loans that can't be paid back on time.
