Michael Dell may have to hike the price he's willing to pay if he wants to take the computer company he founded private, thanks to competition from two new acquisition offers.

A special committee of independent Dell Inc. directors said Monday that it will negotiate with buyout specialist Blackstone Group and activist investor Carl Icahn over bids that rival an offer of more than $24 billion from CEO and Chairman Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners.

The committee has determined that the bids could be superior to the proposal from Dell and Silver Lake, which amounts to $13.65 per share.

Blackstone proposed buying the Round Rock, Texas, company in a deal that would equate to more than $14.25 per share. Icahn wants to buy up to 58 percent of Dell's shares for $15 each.

Icahn Enterprises said in a statement its offer would allow shareholders "that believe, like us, that the future for Dell is bright," to continue with the company.

The special committee said Michael Dell is willing to work with third parties on alternate acquisition proposals.

"We intend to work diligently with all three potential acquirers to ensure the best possible outcome for Dell shareholders, whichever transaction that may be," said Alex Mandl, special committee chairman, in a statement.

That's good news for shareholders hoping for a higher price, and Dell Inc. shares climbed 3.3 percent, or 46 cents, to $14.60 in morning trading.

Dell and other PC makers are struggling as technology spending shifts to smartphones and tablet computers. Dell and HP, the top PC maker, are trying to adapt by making more tablets and diversifying into more profitable areas of technology, such as business software, data analytics and storage.

Michael Dell believes he will be in a better position to overhaul the company if he no longer has to worry about Wall Street's focus on profit fluctuations from one quarter to the next.

The special committee, which is made of four independent directors, spent more than five months evaluating options for Dell before deciding on the offer from Dell and Silver Lake. It considered changes to the company's business plan, a change in dividend policy and sales of all or parts of the business.

Silver Lake raised its bid six times by about $4 billion over the course of negotiations, and the committee said in a statement that it still recommends that bid while it evaluates the other offers.

Icahn, who has a $1 billion stock position in Dell, and other investors have criticized that bid as too low. Southeastern Asset Management, Dell's second-largest shareholder after Michael Dell, has asserted the company is worth closer to $24 per share.

The offer from Michael Dell and Silver Lake was announced in early February. Dell's board then set a 45-day period to allow for offers that might top that bid. That period expired Friday.

Many investors expected that a higher bid was in the works for the world's third-largest PC maker. Several buyout scenarios tying Blackstone to Dell were leaked to the media last week.

Shares of Dell had climbed nearly 40 percent so far in 2013, as of Friday's market close. That includes a rise of nearly 7 percent since the shares closed at $13.27 on Feb. 4, the day before the Dell-Silver Lake bid was announced.

Growing up in rural Indiana in a single-parent family with little money, I was lucky to have a strong mom. She taught us to work hard, appreciate what we have, and help others. Those lessons put me on the path to becoming who I am today.

I am so grateful to my mom for challenging me to embrace the opportunities of gaining an education and playing sports, that she did not have. She taught me that dreams should never be limited by social-economic status or one's environment, and that history does not always have to be repeated... sometimes it needs to be written!

As a professional basketball player, I have had amazing opportunities to use my talents, to play with the best players in the world, and even to represent my country in the Olympics. All of those opportunities began at home.

Basketball has always been more than a job, more than a sport. It has given me a platform to help others by getting involved with causes that give back. I have been privileged to work with the United Nations Foundation to help families and children around the world. My experiences with the UN Foundation have built on what I learned growing up in Indiana -- appreciate what we have, and help other people.

That's why I am proud to be able to honor my mom as part of the Global Mom Relay. Every time this post is shared, $5 will be donated to help women and girls around the world. That path to a better world often starts with women like my mom. Please take a moment to watch this video and then share with your friends to unlock a donation that will help women and girls around the world. Then check back each day through May 8 -- each share helps!

Each time you share this Global Mom Relay piece on Facebook, Twitter, or Email, or donate $5 or more through clicking on the above graphic, a $5 donation (up to $62,500 per week or $125,000 every two weeks) will be donated by Johnson & Johnson and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to Girl Up. Join us by sharing it forward and unlock the potential for women and children around the globe. For more information, visit www.unfoundation.org/globalmomrelay. Bodybuilding icon Joe Weider dies in Los Angeles at 93

By Dan Whitcomb

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Joe Weider, the self-made fitness and bodybuilding guru who built a magazine empire that included more than a dozen popular publications such as Muscle and Fitness, Shape and Men's Fitness, died on Saturday at the age of 93.

Weider, also known for starting the Mr Olympia bodybuilding contest in the 1960s and mentoring a young Arnold Schwarzenegger, passed away from heart failure at a Los Angeles area hospital, his longtime publicist Charlotte Parker said.

"Joe Weider was a titan in the fitness industry and one of the kindest men I have ever met," Schwarzenegger said in a statement posted on his official website.

"He leaves behind a fantastic legacy of a fitter world," the film star and former governor of California said. "Very few people can claim to have influenced as many lives as Joe did through his magazines, his supplements, his training equipment and his big-hearted personality."

Born in a tough neighborhood of Montreal in 1920, Weider began lifting weights as a teenager to stand up to bullies and older boys before competing in his first bodybuilding contest at the age of 17, according to a biography provided by Parker.

He started his first magazine, Your Physique, in the early 1940s and with his younger brother Ben rented Montreal's Monument National Theater to host the first Mr Canada contest during that same decade.

The two brothers also founded the International Federation of Bodybuilders and in 1965 Weider created the Mr Olympia competition, the sport's premiere bodybuilding contest.

Weider met Schwarzenegger at a bodybuilding contest in Europe and convinced him to move from his native Austria to the United States to seek wider recognition.

"He saw a lot in Arnold," Parker said. "He felt that the sport needed a star and right away he could see that Arnold was something special."

Schwarzenegger, then nicknamed the "Austrian Oak," first gained fame by winning a string of Mr Olympia titles in the early 1970s before going on to a successful career in such films as "The Terminator" and "Total Recall."

He was elected governor of California in 2003 and served two terms before retiring from politics.

"Joe didn't just inspire my earliest dreams; he made them come true the day he invited me to move to America to pursue my bodybuilding career," Schwarzenegger, who visited Weider in the hospital before his death, said in the statement.

"I will never forget his generosity. One of Joe's greatest qualities is that he wasn't just generous with his money; he freely gave of his time and expertise and became a father figure for me," he said.

Schwarzenegger also credited Weider with getting him his first acting role, in a movie called "Hercules in New York," by claiming that the hulking young Austrian was a Shakespearean actor from Germany.

Weider, who also created a line of sports nutritional supplements and ultimately founded more than a dozen fitness magazines including Fit Pregnancy, Living Fit and Flex, sold his Weider Publicans to American Media Inc. in the early 2000s.

He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Betty.

Pakistan's Musharraf vows return despite risks

(AP) ? Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf says he will follow through with his plans to return to his homeland despite risks of arrest and other threats.

Musharraf, who has been living in self-exile in London and Dubai, faces possible arrest in Pakistan in connection with the killing of an ex-prime minister.

But Musharraf told journalists Saturday in Dubai that he will return to take part in May elections despite the "fear of the unknown," including possible death threats.

He plans to travel Sunday to Karachi. Journalists and supporters of Musharraf's All Pakistan Muslim League are expected to accompany him.

Musharraf took power in a 1999 coup. He faces charges of conspiring to assassinate ex-premier Benazir Bhutto, who was killed in 2007.

Musharraf has called the charges baseless.

Digital Extreme's sci-fi cop-op shooter, Warframe, has now broken down the walls of Closed Beta allowing the masses to get there hands on the highly anticipated title. Up to four players can join forces on the hunt for ancient artifacts and weapons.

Closed Beta began back in October of 2012 in which selected players assisted to improve the game's experience. Switching focus to the state of the free-to-play market, Sinclair continued, "Free-to-Play has reached a level of acknowledgement within the gaming community that now demands higher level production values and in-depth gaming experiences. Internet Traffic: Your Online Businesss Key to Success ...

More and more online businesses helps it be problematic for everyone to be successful in this field. Internet sites need a adequate amount of specific web traffic in order to sell their products more effectively.

To have increased levels of web traffic you?ve to market, advertising produces targeted traffic and targeted traffic means more income.

Listed below are a few methods for getting interested people in your internet site.

Write an article concerning the solution you?re trying to sell and post it to an article site. This is a good way to advertise your product and inviting your website to be visited by them.

In addition, it is usually free to get your articles in a website. All you need to accomplish is reveal your product and send it for posting.

But, to reach your goals in this form of advertising, you have to create articles which are both entertaining and informative to obtain involved visitors hooked on reading it.

To find out if your report may be worth reading, ask your family or friends to read it and obtain opinions before placing it to sites.

Also, do not forget to incorporate your web sites URL ultimately of one?s post.

The guests in your website themselves is a good supply of promotion, their friends are usually recommended by them to visit your website and spreads from there, causing greater targeted prospects. With this to take place, your site also needs to be breathtaking.

A website should at least get your visitors interest as soon as your site is entered by them. With this, something is needed by you to help keep any visitors in your site.

What exactly is this something you need to seize parents attention? Consider the title of your webpage. Try something that would interest your visitors into staying. Do not devote the name of one?s organization, it would be too formal or boring.

Decide to try some thing exciting associated with the product you?re selling accompanied by articles. Keep at heart to keep your internet site as user-friendly as possible.

You may also advertise on the same product that is sold by websites as you?re. Ask the webmaster of the site to switch advertising link with you.

Targeted traffic can be brought by this to your internet site. You may think as you?re taking traffic for them, that advertising for your competitor is not a great way to do business, but bear in mind that the competitor can be advertising for you and produces focused traffic the exact same.

As a relationship think of it. Keep in mind to advertise in only quality sites.

On topics that are discussed by websites about your product another effective method to invite targeted prospects to your internet site is buying advertising space. You can be sure that the people visiting your internet site are involved and may buy your product.

Engaging in discussion groups that have subjects about the solution you are selling can be a great way to improve traffic in your website.

Attempt to to add your web sites URL after each post answer people concerns in regards to the product, and always. This would cause them to think you?re proficient in the niche and would consider visiting your site.

Answering their questions effectively but limitedly will get them interested. For my website is visited by more information at www.mywebsite.com add lines like:.

Get listed on popular search-engines such as Google or Yahoo. Getting traffic from popular search-engines are not usually free but can definitely increase traffic to your site. Make sure that your website is finished and fully functional when you get your website shown.

Although having high traffic in your internet site is really a good point, but as people say an excessive amount of a good can be poor. This is true in web traffic, too much of it could decelerate or prevent your website to be accessed by users.

of a lot of file uploads and downloads request your host simply cannot manage it it is because. This can be caused by a lot of people that are attempting to access your internet site at the same time or attacks from viruses.

At these times, you?ll have to turn off your website and can affect your business adversely.

Due to this make sure to only advertise in websites associated with your product to make certain qualified traffic, don?t advertise in websites that is irrelevant to your product as unwanted traffic will be only brought by it.

Also, in the event that you just have a small online business, do not advertise in very popular sites. Simply because they have greater machines that will handle the traffic large businesses promotes in highly popular websites. read about how to get more twitter followers

Planck satellite reveals information from just after the Big Bang, largely confirming scientists' theories

The universe is about 80 million years older than previously estimated, according to the best measurements ever taken of the radiation left over from just after the Big Bang. That 0.5 percent age adjustment comes from observations by the Planck satellite revealed March 21 at a press conference in Paris. The Planck data combine to form a map of the universe that largely affirms scientists' theories about the universe's early history, but they also reveal a few quirks that scientists will have to explain.

"To a cosmologist, this map is a gold mine of information," said George Efstathiou, director of the Kavli Institute for Cosmology at the University of Cambridge.

Launched by the European Space Agency in 2009, the Planck satellite scans the sky for the cosmic microwave background, radiation that dates back to about 380,000 years after the Big Bang. Subtle temperature fluctuations in this radiation allow scientists to probe even further back in time, to just to 10-30 seconds after the universe began, during an era called inflation when the universe was expanding faster than the speed of light.

For the most part, Planck's results align extremely well with theoretical predictions, but they do require a few minor tweaks. Researchers who analyzed the telescope?s data announced that the universe is about 13.81 billion years old, or 80 million years older than previously thought. It contains slightly more ordinary matter and slightly less of the mysterious antigravity entity called dark energy than earlier observations suggest.

Planck also found a few features that surprised scientists. One half of the sky seems to have more fluctuations than the other, even though theory predicts the universe should look almost the same in all directions.

Efstathiou said researchers should be able to account for these anomalies without invoking new physics, but he left open more tantalizing possibilities, such as our universe?s being just one of many in a vast multiverse.

The sky map from Planck shows the subtle temperature fluctuations of this radiation, which over time has cooled from about 2,700? Celsius to a mere 2.7 degrees above absolute zero. The red spots are about 1 part in 100,000 hotter than the background temperature, while the blue spots are slightly colder.

"It might look like a dirty rugby ball," Efstathiou said, ?but some cosmologists would have given up their children to get a copy of this map."

Louisiana Guns Law Barring Felons From Owning Firearms Rejected

NEW ORLEANS ? A New Orleans judge says a state law forbidding certain felons from possessing firearms is unconstitutional in light of an amendment passed last year that makes the right to bear arms a "fundamental right" in Louisiana.

District Judge Darryl Derbigny's ruling Thursday sends the issue straight to the Louisiana Supreme Court, which must decide whether the statute infringes on Louisiana citizens' now-enhanced right to gun possession.

The Times-Picayune reports ( ) the Orleans Parish public defenders' office challenged the constitutionality of the statute on behalf of a half-dozen clients, all charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. http://bit.ly/162MTjJ

If the Supreme Court sides with Derbigny, the law will be scrapped and the Legislature forced to rewrite it.

Women abused as children more likely to have children with autism

Mar. 20, 2013 ? Women who experienced physical, emotional, or sexual abuse as children are more likely to have a child with autism than women who were not abused, according to a new study from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH). Those who experienced the most serious abuse had the highest likelihood of having a child with autism -- three-and-a-half times more than women who were not abused.

"Our study identifies a completely new risk factor for autism," said lead author Andrea Roberts, research associate in the HSPH Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. "Further research to understand how a woman's experience of abuse is associated with autism in her children may help us better understand the causes of autism and identify preventable risk factors."

The study appears online March 20, 2013 and in the May 2013 print issue of JAMA Psychiatry. It is the first to explore the relationship between a mother's exposure to childhood abuse and risk of autism in her children.

The authors examined data from more than 50,000 women enrolled in the Nurses' Health Study II. They found that it was not just women exposed to the most serious levels of abuse who had higher risk of having a child with autism, but also a large number of women who experienced moderate abuse. While about 2% of women reported the most serious abuse, even women in the top 25% of abuse severity -- which included mostly women who experienced more moderate levels of abuse -- were 60% more likely to have a child with autism compared with women who did not experience abuse. These results suggest that childhood abuse is not only very harmful for the person who directly experiences it, but may also increase risk for serious disabilities in the next generation, the authors said.

Delving further, the researchers looked at nine pregnancy-related risk factors to see if they were linked to higher risk of having a child with autism in women who were abused as children. These nine risk factors -- including gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and smoking -- have been previously associated with an increased likelihood of having a child with autism.

The researchers did find that women who had experienced abuse as children had a higher risk for each of the pregnancy-related risk factors that were examined. Surprisingly, though, those risk factors accounted for only 7% of the increased likelihood of having a child with autism among women who were abused.

Given that these factors accounted for so little of the association between mother's experience of abuse and risk of autism in her children, the authors speculated that other factors may be playing a role. One possibility, they said, is that long-lasting effects of abuse on women's biological systems, such as the immune system and stress-response system, are responsible for increasing their likelihood of having a child with autism. More research is needed to tease out the mechanisms involved in the maternal childhood abuse-autism link, the authors said.

"Childhood abuse is associated with a wide array of health problems in the person who experiences it, including both mental health outcomes like depression and anxiety, and physical health outcomes like obesity and lung disease. Our research suggests that the effects of childhood abuse may also reach across generations," said senior author Marc Weisskopf, associate professor of environmental and occupational epidemiology at HSPH.

Given the findings in this study, the authors suggest increasing efforts to prevent childhood abuse, and suggest that clinicians focus more strongly on limiting pregnancy-related autism risk factors, particularly among women who experienced abuse in childhood.

The genes in question are known as MHC (major histocompatibility complex) genes. Selecting a mate with very different MHC genes from one's own makes sense, because your offspring will then have a greater variety of immunity genes -- and a correspondingly greater resistance to disease. But until now, no scent offering information about MHC genes had been discovered among those emitted by humans and animals.

Now researchers from the University of T?bingen's Immunology department and the Proteome Center, working with their colleagues from the University of Saarland, have managed to do just that. Their results, just published in Nature Communications, will lead scientists to review the "sniff out a mate" theory.

It is well known that the MHC genes determine which MHC peptides a cell presents at its surface to the immune system's killer cells. These peptides are usually composed of the body's own proteins and therefore do not set off any reaction. But if the MHC peptides come from a virus, the immune system's killer cells can recognize that and attack it. According to one current theory, the MHC peptides also communicate the smell which offers information about MHC genes -- a theory tested in mice. Special sensor cells were found which are able to recognize and distinguish the various MHC peptides from one another. Experiments have shown that synthetic MHC peptides in high concentrations were able to influence the behavior of mice, and that mouse urine carries what is believed to be the smell of MHC genes. Until now, it was not known whether MHC peptides even occurred naturally in urine.

The researchers have now been able to identify in mouse urine an MHC peptide indicating a corresponding MHC gene. Yet the concentration was extremely low -- the urine contained around one-millionth of the amount of MHC peptides than had been used in previous behavioral experiments. And hundreds of other peptides were identified in the mouse urine along with this MHC peptide -- those peptides were derived from all kinds of genes but had nothing to do with MHC genes. These peptides should enable mice to map most of the fellow mouse's genes. They appear in concentrations up to a million times higher than that of the MHC peptide, coming closer to the amount used in the behavioral experiments. Both kinds of peptides can activate specific olfactory cells in mice, as researchers from the University of Saarland showed.

These results suggest that "smelling" similarities and differences in the overall genome plays a far greater role than the smell of immunogenes. Smell could provide comprehensive information on the relationship between two individuals. The researchers found that non-MHC peptides that were different between two mice of the same species could be precisely distinguished by their smell receptor cells. This raises the question of how the previous experiments carried out with unnaturally high concentrations of synthetic MHC peptides ought to be interpreted. To this day, no MHC peptide has been detected in human urine, sweat, or saliva. The large number of other peptides -- giving a picture of nearly all other genes and occurring in far greater concentrations -- needs to be taken into account in future behavioral experiments. It may be that these frequent peptides completely cover up the influence of other peptides providing information on the immune system.

Israeli official: Chemical weapons used in Syria

(AP) ? A senior Israeli official said Wednesday that it is "apparently clear" that chemical weapons were recently used in Syria, and that the alleged attack will be a main topic of conversation with visiting President Barack Obama.

The statement by Yuval Steinitz, the newly appointed minister of intelligence and strategic affairs, conflicts with U.S. assessments that there is no evidence behind accusations traded the day before between Syrian rebels and the Bashar Assad regime of a chemical weapons attack in a village in the north of the country.

Steinitz, who was speaking to Army Radio, did not say how he came to the conclusion that the weapons were used. He would not comment on whether it was Assad forces or the rebels that used them, saying it was not important.

A senior defense official told the Associated Press that he concurred chemical weapons had been used, basing that on intelligence reports. He would not elaborate. He spoke anonymously because he is not allowed to speak to the media.

Israel has repeatedly expressed concern that Syria's chemical arsenal could fall into the hands of anti-Israel militants like Lebanon's Hezbollah, an Assad ally, or an al-Qaida-linked group fighting with the rebels.

Steinitz said that after Iran's nuclear program, the fate of Syria's chemical weapons is the second most urgent issue that will be discussed with Obama during his 48 hour visit that begins Wednesday afternoon.

"It is apparently clear that chemical weapons were used," Steinitz said. "The fact they apparently used chemical weapons against civilians needs to worry us and shows the urgency of taking care of the issue," he said.

Syrian rebels and Assad's government blamed each other Tuesday for a chemical attack on a northern village. There have been many reports and rumors of such weapons being used throughout the war but no attack has yet been confirmed. The U.S. said there was no evidence chemical weapons were used.

The use of such weapons would be a nightmare scenario in the 2-year-old conflict that has killed an estimated 70,000 people, and the competing claims showed willingness by both sides to go to new levels to seek support from world powers.

President Barack Obama has declared the use, deployment or transfer of the weapons would be a "red line" for possible military intervention by the U.S. in the Syrian conflict.

The Syrian state-run SANA news agency said "a missile containing a chemical substance" was fired at the village of Khan al-Assal in Aleppo province by "terrorists" ? the term it uses for rebels. Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister Faysal Mekdad said 31 people were killed.

SANA added that more than 100 others were wounded, some of them critically, and it published pictures showing casualties, including children, on stretchers in what appears to be a hospital ward. None showed signs of physical injuries. The rebels quickly denied using chemical weapons and accused regime forces of doing so.

The Aleppo Media Center, affiliated with the rebels, said there were cases of "suffocation and poison" among civilians in Khan al-Assal after a missile was fired at the area. It said in a statement the cases were "most likely" caused by regime forces' use of "poisonous gases."

Israel says it is trying to stay out of Syria's civil war, although it has strongly signaled that it was responsible for an airstrike in January and suggested it was targeting a Hezbollah convoy carrying anti-aircraft missiles to Lebanon.

It is concerned however about violence spilling into northern Israel.

The military says four wounded Syrians approached the Israel-Syria frontier on Wednesday and received medical treatment from Israeli troops. It said two of the Syrians are receiving medical aid adjacent to the border fence, while the two others were evacuated to Israeli hospitals following the severity of their injuries.

'My Strange Addiction' rules for drinking blood

TLC

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

We recently learned about Michelle, the subject of the upcoming season finale of "My Strange Addiction" who has a real penchant for pig blood. But as it turns out, there's more to Michelle's addiction than just that. In fact, the porcine elixir is a distant second to her real beverage of choice: human blood.

In a new clip from the TLC show, the tattoo artist shares her very specific sanguinarian rules.

"I always make sure it's from somebody that I'm close to, somebody that I would consider a best friend, a partner, a lover -- somebody that I know inside and out," Michelle explained.

Here's hoping it's also someone who's had a blood test recently, as lab results tend to be a bit more reliable than a sense of closeness. But hey, Michelle has her own priorities when it comes to harvesting the nectar of life -- like where to start when drinking straight from the source.

"It's either got to be the upper arm, or it's got to be in the elbow area or upper back, inner thigh," the 29-year-old insisted. "I try to avoid the neck 'cause that's way too clich?."

Totally. And you know what else is clich?? Vampires. Sure, Michelle might have the standard issue, goth-requisite "Bela Lugosi's Dead" Bauhaus poster on her wall, but she's not trying copy the night crawlers.

"I do not want to categorize myself as a vampire," she said. "I'm simply somebody that enjoys blood -- quite a lot."

Got it?

See more of Michelle's not-at-all vampire-ish behavior when the season finale of "My Strange Addiction" airs Wednesday 9 p.m. on TLC.

Dating in middle school leads to higher dropout, drug-use rates

Monday, March 18, 2013

Students who date in middle school have significantly worse study skills, are four times more likely to drop out of school and report twice as much alcohol, tobacco and marijuana use than their single classmates, according to new research from the University of Georgia.

"Romantic relationships are a hallmark of adolescence, but very few studies have examined how adolescents differ in the development of these relationships," said Pamela Orpinas, study author and professor in the College of Public Health and head of the Department of Health Promotion and Behavior.

Orpinas followed a group of 624 students over a seven-year period from sixth to 12th grade. Each year, the group completed a survey indicating whether they had dated and reported the frequency of different behaviors, including the use of drugs and alcohol. Their teachers completed questionnaires about the students' academic efforts. The Healthy Teens Longitudinal Study included schools from six school districts in northeast Georgia. Investigators used two indicators of students' school success: high school dropout rates and yearly teacher-rated study skills. The results of the study were recently published in the Journal of Research on Adolescence.

"In our study, we found four distinct trajectories," Orpinas said. "Some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had consistently the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school. We also saw a large number of students who reported dating since sixth grade."

Of the early daters, a large portion of the study group?38 percent?reported dating at almost all measurement points throughout the study. The second at-risk segment, identified as "high middle school dating," represented 22 percent of the sample. One hundred percent of these students dated in sixth grade.

"At all points in time, teachers rated the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the worst study skills," according to the journal article.

Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to academic success such as doing work for extra credit, being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters.

"A likely explanation for the worse educational performance of early daters is that these adolescents start dating early as part of an overall pattern of high-risk behaviors," Orpinas said.

Children in these early dating groups were also twice as likely to use alcohol and drugs.

"Dating a classmate may have the same emotional complications of dating a co-worker," Orpinas said. "When the couple splits, they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the ex-partner dating someone else. It is reasonable to think this scenario could be linked to depression and divert attention from studying."

Authors indicated that more research is needed to identify characteristics that distinguish dating as a healthy developmental process from dating as part of a problem behavior syndrome.

Orpinas says this study suggests, "dating should not be considered a rite of passage in middle school."

Writers ? Come Out From Behind Your Screen | UK Speechwriters ...

Written March 19th, 2013 |

So what are the benefits of meeting other writers? Once I would have found it difficult to make a very long list. That was until I was invited to the Ragan Executive Communications conference in Washington DC in 2008.

As a freelance speechwriter in the UK I considered myself a rare breed, permanently on the brink of extinction.

I paid my own fare and turned up in Washington DC. I found myself in a hotel with over 200 speechwriters. Chatting to them, I discovered they were all struggling with the same problems.

How do you get access to the person you?re writing for? How do you stop CEOs hiding behind dry?corporate nonsense? How do you keep your self respect, when every Tom, Dick and Harry in an organisation feels qualified to tamper with your work?

Up to then my quest had been to wrestle with these problems on my own, Brian contra mundum. The Ragan conference felt like going to heaven and discovering I was right all along, and ?all the saved were just like me.

It really shakes you up to be around your own kind.

My trip to Washington not only banished stale middle-aged work-related resentments, it changed the way I did my job.

I found fresh confidence ? I knew I did a job that was important because so many others were employed doing it.

I picked up expertise ? distinctive American perspectives from experts like Drew Westen, who wrote The Political Brain.

I made friends ? I?m still in touch with half-a-dozen of the delegates who I met there and several of them have come to the UK.

Taking a leaf from many of the best British entrepreneurs, I decided to transplant an idea that was ahead of its time in the US, and bring it to the UK.

As Rory Sutherland said, in a recent column in The Spectator,??Nothing fully replaces face-to-face contact. And many of the most important interactions between employees are serendipitous. Electronic contact needs to be interspersed with personal contact.?

I found a European tribe of speechwriters, and, since 2009, we?ve been hosting UK Speechwriters? Guild conferences.

Last year we also decided to extend the franchise and create a conference for copywriters, too.

The conference, which took place at Bournemouth University Media School, worked along the same lines.

We got a selection of the country?s best speakers and we divide the day up with keynotes and breakouts. We do some social stuff before and after. And we ?built bridges, which we maintain afterwards.

We?re planning a second more ambitious conference on the theme Who Needs Copywriters? on Friday 19 April 2013 at Bournemouth University Media School.

The conference will be hosted by Andy Maslen, who wrote the book?Write to Sell: the Ultimate Guide to Great Copywriting.?He is also the?Managing Director of?Sunfish Ltd, a?copywriting agency.

We?ve recruited a full-time professional tweet writer to speak called David Levin. He?s previously spoken at??Powered by Tweets?,?Twitter?s official UK creative conference.

Ben Locker will bring his wit ?to the conference. He?s an Essex-based copywriter and co-founder (with Tom Albrighton) of the Professional Copywriters? Network, the association for all agency and freelance copywriters in the UK.

Carol Bentley is a direct response copywriter. She?s written four books giving advice on how to write compelling sales letters and use direct marketing strategies. In her keynote, Carol will share insights from her new book: I Want To Buy Your Product? Have You Sent Me A Sales Message Yet?

Roger Horberry?has written on writing itself in titles such as:?Brilliant Copywriting.?He?also runs copy workshops and lectures at the University of Lincoln.

Andy York?is a verbal identity consultant and writer, helping brands define and express themselves through tone of voice. These include Dell, Nissan, Aviva, the iconic Deloitte rebrand, the Centre for World Culture and the groundbreaking Ericsson storytelling project.

BAFTA-nominee and Jerwood Film Prize-winner,?Tim Clague,?has scripted over 100 corporate videos as well as films and documentaries. He will be speaking on?Writing for Video.

Ros Sinclair, winner of a?Cannes Gold, One Show Silver and rare D&AD silver for copy,?will be running a breakout session: How To Break Creative Deadlock.

Claire Falcon set up her own writing agency, Falcon Windsor, in 2004. Her ?breakout session will is titled:?Why Bother If No One?s Going To Read It???- The truth behind annual reports, why they really are worth the money you spend on them.

If you?re really keen, you can also do an intensive workshop the day before, and spend two days in Bournemouth in May.

Please tell us now if you?re going to join us at?http://copywritersconference.eventbrite.co.uk/

Curiosity Mars rover sees trend in water presence

Mar. 18, 2013 ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has seen evidence of water-bearing minerals in rocks near where it had already found clay minerals inside a drilled rock.

Last week, the rover's science team announced that analysis of powder from a drilled mudstone rock on Mars indicates past environmental conditions that were favorable for microbial life. Additional findings presented today (March 18) at a news briefing at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in The Woodlands, Texas, suggest those conditions extended beyond the site of the drilling.

Using infrared-imaging capability of a camera on the rover and an instrument that shoots neutrons into the ground to probe for hydrogen, researchers have found more hydration of minerals near the clay-bearing rock than at locations Curiosity visited earlier.

The rover's Mast Camera (Mastcam) can also serve as a mineral-detecting and hydration-detecting tool, reported Jim Bell of Arizona State University, Tempe. "Some iron-bearing rocks and minerals can be detected and mapped using the Mastcam's near-infrared filters."

Ratios of brightness in different Mastcam near-infrared wavelengths can indicate the presence of some hydrated minerals. The technique was used to check rocks in the "Yellowknife Bay" area where Curiosity's drill last month collected the first powder from the interior of a rock on Mars. Some rocks in Yellowknife Bay are crisscrossed with bright veins.

"With Mastcam, we see elevated hydration signals in the narrow veins that cut many of the rocks in this area," said Melissa Rice of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. "These bright veins contain hydrated minerals that are different from the clay minerals in the surrounding rock matrix."

The Russian-made Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons (DAN) instrument on Curiosity detects hydrogen beneath the rover. At the rover's very dry study area on Mars, the detected hydrogen is mainly in water molecules bound into minerals. "We definitely see signal variation along the traverse from the landing point to Yellowknife Bay," said DAN Deputy Principal Investigator Maxim Litvak of the Space Research Institute, Moscow. "More water is detected at Yellowknife Bay than earlier on the route. Even within Yellowknife Bay, we see significant variation."

Findings presented today from the Canadian-made Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) on Curiosity's arm indicate that the wet environmental processes that produced clay at Yellowknife Bay did so without much change in the overall mix of chemical elements present. The elemental composition of the outcrop Curiosity drilled into matches the composition of basalt. For example, it has basalt-like proportions of silicon, aluminum, magnesium and iron. Basalt is the most common rock type on Mars. It is igneous, but it is also thought to be the parent material for sedimentary rocks Curiosity has examined.

"The elemental composition of rocks in Yellowknife Bay wasn't changed much by mineral alteration," said Curiosity science team member Mariek Schmidt of Brock University, Saint Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

A dust coating on rocks had made the composition detected by APXS not quite a match for basalt until Curiosity used a brush to sweep the dust away. After that, APXS saw less sulfur.

"By removing the dust, we've got a better reading that pushes the classification toward basaltic composition," Schmidt said. The sedimentary rocks at Yellowknife Bay likely formed when original basaltic rocks were broken into fragments, transported, re-deposited as sedimentary particles, and mineralogically altered by exposure to water.

NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Project is using Curiosity to investigate whether an area within Mars' Gale Crater has ever offered an environment favorable for microbial life. Curiosity, carrying 10 science instruments, landed seven months ago to begin its two-year prime mission. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington.
